Addition to:

 Thomas and Nancy Moore History

While searching for more information on Thomas and Nancy Williams Moore we happened upon a website in Oregon that posted funeral notices from the Medford Mail, a newspaper in Medford, Oregon.  We were pleased to find the following notice for Nathan Stidham, son-in-law of Thomas and Nancy Moore:

“Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 14 September 1900, Central Point items, p.3, c.4:  Nathan Stidham died at his home in this city, Thursday, September 6th at 1:30 AM, aged 63 years.  He had been suffering for several months with hemorrhage of the stomach.  He leaves a wife, three sons and four daughters to mourn his loss, besides a large circle of friends.  The grief stricken family has the sympathy of their family and friends in their sad affliction.”

Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 14 September 1900, p.3, c. 5: Death of Mr. Stidham.  Died at his home in Central Point, Oregon, Wednesday, September 5, 1900.  Nathan Stidham, aged 63 years, seven months and twenty seven days.  Deceased was born in Monroe County, Tennessee but spent most of his youth and early manhood in southwestern Missouri, where he married in 1866.  In 1880 he came to Oregon and for two years lived in Ashland.  For the next eight years he was located on a farm on Rogue River.  Moving to Central Point in 1890 he made that place his home until his death.  Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Central Point, Reverand O.J. Gist of Medford preaching the sermon.  The members of the G.A.R. Post of Central Point, of which Mr. Stidham was an honored member, attended in a body and had charge of the burial.  There was a very large attendance of the people of the town and surrounding community, attesting their high regard for Mr. Stidham and the bereaved family.  In this man’s death the community has lost a highly esteemed citizen, and the church a faithful member.”

Additional comments:

The two obituaries list conflicting dates of death.  Grave marker in Central Point Cemetery does not give a date of death.

Roork Family History

On September 19, 2007, we met with several Roork cousins in the little town of Salem in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.  Other cousins arriving for the meeting were Joe and Sharon Durbin of Wyandotte, Oklahoma; David and Connie Caviness of Chilhowie, Missouri; Tom and Susan Robinson of Independence, Missouri and Linda Roork of Oklahoma.   Joe and Sharon brought along Joe’s 92 year old mother who was such a blessing to all of us.  We visited home sites and cemeteries in the Oxford, Calico Rock, Byron and Salem, Arkansas areas and spent time with some of the Roork cousins that lived in Salem.  Al Roork has been the Chief of Police in Salem for many years and Sam Roork, his brother, has been a dairy farmer and now runs cattle on his 400+ acre farm.  Also present were Sam’s wife, Betty, and Al’s girlfriend, Peggy.  We went out to dinner twice with all the cousins at local restaurants and needless to say, we talked and we talked and then talked some more.  As we would gather in one of the motel rooms for visiting we tried to share information with one another so that we could learn more about Sarah Elizabeth Moore Roork and her descendants.  We were able to visit the burial site of Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth Moore Roork in the Shaver Campground Cemetery near Oxford and got to see the tombstones that the cousins had purchased.  Joe Durbin did a great job of getting the tombstones in place prior to our visit for all of us to see.  It was a great experience and we will always be grateful to Sharon Roork Durbin for posting a message on a Rootsweb website query board so that we could find it and respond to her message.  It brought about finding a family line that we had been researching for many years but it also connected us with living descendants that turned out to be loving, Christian cousins.
